The Equine water treadmill is a controlled environment for horses to exercise with the resistance of water. Our treadmill has a transparent side allowing the horse to feel more relaxed and less confined. The water level and speed of the treadmill can be altered meaning each horse has its own individual programme.
WHO USES THE TREADMILL?
The treadmill is used by professionals and amateurs alike. Whether its used for rehabilitation or as part of a horses training programme. It has proven advantages for all disciplines. There is no maximum age limit for horses to use the treadmill all we ask is that horses are well handled.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THE TREADMILL?
Increased cardiovascular activity
Increased stamina and strength
Increased stride length
Low impact exercise with increased resistance
Increased joint flexion
Increased core muscle engagement
Increased muscle tone
Helps in recovery from injury when riding is not possible
WHAT IS A NORMAL SESSION?
The horse will enter the treadmill and start to walk on the conveyor belt while the treadmill is filled with water to the required height (normally up to the knee). Once filled the horse will walk and if required trot, for a pre-determined amount of time. The water is then drained and the horse allowed to cool down without the resistance of water.
The first time your horse goes on the treadmill, they will walk on the conveyor belt with only a small amount of water to familiarise them with the concept. The water level will then be increased on each subsequent session until they are comfortably working at knee height. We can offer a familiarisation package to get your horse used to the treadmill, please ask for more details.
